The war measures act was a federal law adopted by parliament in 1914 after the outbreak of world war one. It gave broad powers to the Canadian government to maintain security and order during times of war. It was used to suspend the civil liberties of people in Canada who were considered “enemy aliens” during both world wars, leading to mass arrest and detention without charge or trial. The Act was also invoked during the 1970 October Crisis in Quebec. It has since been replaced by the more limited Emergencies Act. The war measures act did seem like a good idea but it was able to be abused and in fact sorta was. Not only that but the act also takes away rights and freedoms from citizens which should never happen. I think that the war measures act was a good place to start with protecting citizens in time of dire need but it is not what it should've been and it should've been more limited. Bill C-51 is an Act of the Parliament of Canada passed by the Harper government that wildly opened the authority of Canadian government agencies to share information about individuals easily. This bill gives the government a lot of power towards its citizens. Mainly this bill allows the government to heighten security and watch people more closely if they are seen as a target or threat. There are problems to this, even with the security part. If the government is able and allowed to watch who ever they want then how private are our private lives? how safe is our information and everything on the internet? If you express any likeness or joy or agreement with terrorism then you can become a target for surveying by the government which means what all are they watching us do? do they find it through reading our private texts or stalking online? Having broad security measures also means losing rights and freedoms which should not be a thing. Security measures should not be broad or allow the government to go through everyone's phones or anything like that, yes it is a good way to catch terrorists but how can civilians sleep peacefully knowing they could be the next accidental target? Quebec has just recently passed its Bill 21, which bans workers such as teachers and police officers from wearing religious symbols. Many Quebecois are angry about this and for a good reason. Religion is part of someones identity and to take that out of the work place is like taking someones identity out as well. The majority of Quebec however agree about this bill, some because it protects their heritage and where they came from and others because they think work will go better and have less discrimination without those religious symbols. I however do not agree because no one should be discriminated in the first place, people could feel more discriminated not being allowed to wear what they believe and are comfortable in. Religion is not just religion, it is an identity and taking that out of the work place is a bad direction to take and it could lead down darker paths for religions in Quebec.

Classical liberalism is what created every government we know today. Classical liberalism wasn't made over night but instead along a timeline of hundreds of years with ideas from hundreds of thinkers and philosophers. Classical liberalism is just like capitalism is today, classical liberalism could be classified as the mother of capitalism. These two ideologies have much in common, free market, minimal government, and gave them rights, freedoms, and law. Down the line classical liberalism kept changing, allowing welfare, more equality and way more help from the government. Classical liberalism has changed so much that now it is known as only liberalism and is predominantly left wing now. I think that liberalism took a step in the right direction, I think that where it is at now is not quite perfect but is getting pretty darn close. The Luddites was an ideology to oppose classical liberalism. Luddites mainly wanted things to stay as they were, they did not want anything to change. This ideology began 1779 with Ned Ludd who is believed to be the first one to destroy work place machinery. In the early 19th century, skilled textile artisans were being replaced by machines operated by cheap, relatively unskilled laborers. In 1811 textile workers formed the Army of Reddressers and they would destroy the industrial machinery and the company's caught on and the movement now would be known as Luddism and it was spreading like wild fire. I don't much like Luddism because there must be change in order to move forward in life and as a whole. Luddism might've brought like minded people together and got done what they wanted to accomplish, but if luddism would've taken control of the world then we would not be near where we are today. The chartists where a group back in 1838 for the working class people. This group wanted voting for everyone, no matter race, religion, etc who is over 21 be able to vote. They also wanted equal sized electoral districts, voting by secret ballet and much more that we have available to us today. The Chartists are ones that I can get fully behind because what they are asking for isn't just for a certain class of people but for everyone. Also voting is good because it shows what the majority of the people want, not just what the higher up strong people want. the chartists had believed that having voting would help out people in the workplace, and when the these policies were actually implemented it did end up helping those working class people. Health care has become a huge topic for this years election. Our current health care can have really long wait times and sometimes not enough doctors or nurses working or even available. Rachel Notley, the leader of the New Democratic Party, has promised Alberta that she will reduce wait times in hospitals and clinics as well as build new medical centers. Rachel wants to raise the funding to healthcare and make sure that every albertan will get health care. Most of the other parties have the same outline of what they are going to do but Jason Kenny of the United Conservative Party has promised something different from all parties. Jason has promised that to help reduce wait times he will contract out to private doctors and centers. How this would work is that if you're hurt and you need medical attention but the wait will be to long then the hospital can send you to another private center or doctor which will still be paid for normally like health care already is. I agree with both the NDP and UCP on this topic, both have great ideas. UCP's idea of contracting out really intrigues me, this could be a effective way of not only getting wait times down but also expanding Alberta's range of doctors. Infrastructure is always important for an election because we want to know the kind of plans the government has for our cities. Looking at my province now I can tell that we need to pay more attention to the roads for sure and that some schools, hospitals, and other like buildings need to be remodeled as well. The UCP government wants to maintain their current plan but they also see what I and many others see as well, they have said that their main focus will be roads, schools and hospitals then moving on to what the whole community wants not just the government. The NDP on the other hand has said that they'd focus on Public transit, such as bus and train, and also schools. I like the UCP plans a lot more because there has to be attention to the roads to make them safer for everyone and so that vehicles are not getting damaged by pot holes or anything else. I also like that UCP would also focus on excising schools and hospitals because it would be quicker and cheaper to fix what we have then to build something totally new that we don't need just yet. Education has also been a high issue in this years election. Education should be the number one priority of the government because this is what teaches the kids to be ready for the world and their life to come. Education however is not at the top priority and you can tell by looking at the schools, there are way to big class sizes, you just sit almost all day, and science shows that school actually starts to early for the mind to be fully awake and functional. The NDP and UCP have two totally different ways with dealing with the education in our province. The NDP would keep the curriculum the same, put more funding into the schools, hire more teachers and make it more affordable and modern. UCP on the other hand wants to go the opposite way as the NDP and change the curriculum with some old and some new materials, the UCP was also talking about raising diploma marks back to 50% of your final mark. I take the side of the NDP more on this one because schools do need more teachers and funding but I also think that its smart for the UCP to change up the curriculum because it shows that this curriculum can be hard for students to follow, keep up with, or even learn from, we need a new curriculum that's open to many more forms of learning. P.O.V #4- To what extent should individuals and groups in Canada embrace a national identity?6/18/2018 Canada is known as the most multicultural country in the world; and we all take pride in that, as we should. Canada has been multicultural since way back; in 1971 Canada was the first country to adopt multiculturalism as an official government policy, this achievement really makes Canada stand out strong from other countries, this is something I am sure millions of Canadians are proud of and I know I am. All Canadians should all be proud of our multiculturalism, with Canada being so diverse it can feel like and truly be homes to people from anywhere and everywhere, we can give others a sense of peace and hope, many people need a place to go where they wont be judged where they are from or their race and Canada provides that for anyone. I truly believe that everyone should be proud of Canada, I think it's very important that people have a safe place to go where they wont be judged or harassed, and i'm proud that Canada is that place. With all of Canada's accomplishments I believe that this is one that all of Canada should be proud of. Canada has a responsible government; for Canada this means that the government responds to the people rather then colonial governors. Created back in the 1840's this responsible government is the reason our government is like it is today. Responsible government means that a minister of the crown must have the majority of votes in order to govern. I believe that this is a reasonable thing; it's good to have a government that is supposed to and most of the time actually listens to the people of Canada's problems other then their own problems. Having a responsible government gives us Canadians the ability to vote for who we thing will truly help us out, and still continue to hear our problems after the election. To make the people happy then the government has to actually be good and meet our needs and wants, if someone can't so that then we are able to do a "vote of non-confidence"; this is where if enough people lose confidence in the government there can be another election held to see if someone else will get in as the majority. The "vote of non-confidence" is another good reason for Canada to have a responsible government, if we feel as though our needs are not going to be met then we can get someone in who can meet them, and I feel as though that is important. I find that responsible government is truly good for Canada and helps us out a lot. Equalization payment are used to try to balance the financial propensities in all provinces (excluding the territories). Every year when the government gets their taxes and money from the provinces they split it up and give it back; provinces making less pay less and get more back, provinces making more pay more and get less. This year (2018-2019) Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador will not being getting any money back. I have mixed feelings about the equalization payments. The first way i see equalization payments are good; they make sure everything in Canada is equal, that all provinces will always have the money they need and that is good. However sometimes the amount that some of the richer countries have to pay are out of hand and then (just like this year) they don't get anything back unlike other provinces, so they may think it is unfair. I find this idea to be good one due to every province being able to sustain no matter what however it can be a little unfair to some of the provinces. WW2- World war 2 began in September 1939 and went on until 1945 when the United states ended the war. This world war began with Germany attacking and taking over Poland. The Germans did this to take back land and power that they had lost after world war 1 due to the treaty of Versailles after their defeat. World war two had started due to Hitlers Ultra national views on what he wanted Germany to be; the perfect people (blond, German, blue eyes, etc), the ultimate power on the world, and more. This is one national interest that should not have been pursued. This national interest had caused millions of deaths of many different people and a lot of destruction. This was a very tragic time for everyone and it should not have of been something that should've been followed and should not be followed again if it was to happen again. Arctic Sovereignty- One of the most recent problems is the argument over sovereignty of the Arctic. With Canada, Russia, The USA, Greenland and Iceland being so close to the north pole it's no doubt that they would all be fighting over who owns it, and everyone wants it for good reasons. Canada's islands heading up towards the north pole are also part of this arctic sovereignty problem as other countries want the north pole and Canada's islands for oil and to control the North-West passage that currently goes through Canada's owned land. As the other countries want all this land mass for military, oil, and more ship passage and more control of what goes through the waters, Canada has other plans for the arctic. Canada's national interest is to protect the arctic from being harmed, preserving all the ice and wildlife. Due to global warming the arctic is quickly melting and many arctic animals are in danger, Canada wants to keep the land that is left how it is and make sure there is no more harm to it or the animals and so when global warming slows down it can go back to its normal state. This national interest should be followed by everyone, we need to keep the arctic safe and clean as global warming has already done enough damage and what other countries have in mind for it will just make everything worse. 9/11- On September 11, 2001 2 planes had supposedly hit the New York stock exchange towers and one more into the pentagon killing over 3,000 people. After this "attack" President bush had then convinced everyone that Saddam Hussein then had WMD (weapons of mass destruction) and that soldiers should head over to stop these WMD from being used. The united states soldiers where the deployed in 2003 and Saddam Hussein was executed in 2006. After the execution the United States began to harvest oil from Iraq soil and then the suspicions where put into place that still run around today. The UN didn't find any WMD in Iraq after Saddam was killed and the USA got a lot of criticism and a lot of speculations if it was all a set up to get millions worth of oil. The national interest of the United States had caused a lot of casualties for the people in Iraq and a lot of destruction. This national interest I believe should not have been pursued due to the wars that had followed all these events and the stealing of the oil in Iraq's soil. Globalization has its ups and downs like everything else. Sometimes globalization works great and other times it need improvement. Globalization isn't even near perfect for anyone in the world but its made the world what it is today. Because of all these ups and downs it has brought us all closer together for the better and sometimes worse. The Kyoto protocol was created by many countries coming together to fight global climate change by eliminating harmful emissions around the world. The Kyoto protocol would never of been created without globalization. This to me is a huge part of globalization; I would really like to see the goal of the Kyoto protocol happen but sadly it was killed off due to countries finding it hard. Following the failure of the Kyoto protocol came the COP 21 meeting in France 2015. At this conference a new plan has been created to fight the harmful emissions; having over 150 countries sign this agreement. When countries come together its not always in a good way like the Kyoto protocol. The World Wars are a good example of this. Countries came together in the world wars to fight for what they believed in no matter if it was harmful or not. With these countries coming together it just meant more have died due to greater numbers. I don't think that this is a good way to use the globalization idea around the world. To me globalization should be used to help everyone and anyone around the world. Ship breaking is the breaking down of ships after their lifetime is over. A ships lifetime in usually 25-30 years then is transported to third world countries to be broken down. The workers are only paid around a dollar a day and work in unsafe working conditions; having people die every day. This is a very bad use of globalization, taking advantage of third world countries to do the dirty unsafe jobs and should be changed. Starting in 1492 historical globalization has shaped what we know today. Everything that has happened in the past has shaped what we know and love today. In Canada there are many examples of historical globalization that shaped what we know; but there have also been good examples outside of Canada as well. The Beothuk was a first nations group in Canada living on the island of Newfound Land. These people lived peacefully on this land until they came into contact with the european people. After the european people have came the Beothuk where hunted down and killed off for their land. Residential schools are a big part of Canada's globalization. After the Europeans came to Canada and started forming the treaties they tried to get them to become European as well. To do this they created residential schools for indian kids. These schools only taught in European ways and in the english language, these schools would not allow Indian languages. Residential schools where harmful against indians as humans and as a culture. Thankfully today all residential schools have been shut down and we are embracing the first nations culture. The Rwandan Genocide happened in 1994. This was a battle between two colonists who live there; the Hutus and Tutsis. This genocide happened when Germany took over Rwanda and convinced the Hutus that they where better then the Tutsis; when WWII ended and Germany lost Belgium took over Rwanda and supported and advanced the violence that Germany set upon Rwanda killing hundreds of thousands of people. This was a very dark and bad time for Rwanda; thanks to globalization a whole culture was almost killed off once again. This later came to a end and the Tutsis quickly began to apologize and try to make things right with the Hutus. Globalization has their ups and downs all over the world; but with all those ups and downs it formed the world we know today. Without globalization we wouldn't have near what we have in our lives.
Globalization is everywhere; the whole world is a victim of of globalization if it's good or bad. Our country is made up of globalization and plays a big part in it and relies strongly on it; but not just Canada almost everywhere in the world relies on globalization. Globalization is a term that refers to the different cultures and materials such as food and silk being distributed all over the world to countries who can't grow or manufacture it. Globalization is seen differently all over the world; to some it's seen as a good thing, to most... it's harmful. The Lubicon Cree is a first nations community in the northern Canada region in Alberta. This is a small group of people and that where passed over for many years. When the treaties for the first nations this group was to small to be noticed so they where unseen and never singed any treaties. In 1973 a war broke put called the "Yom Kippur War". There where two sides to this war; Israel and many european followers including the United States and Egypt and Syria followed by Saudi Arabia and the heavily oil rich countries in the middle east. Because of the side the United States was on the oil rich countries stopped shipping them oil to use so they looked to Canada for help. Around 20 years before the war the Canadians found oil on the Lubicon crees land and found this to be the perfect time to take it. Because this community didn't sign any treaties the land "wasn't theres" and the Canadians did what they could with it to get the oil destroying their land and overall heritage. Nike is widely known and loved all over the world; well almost all over the world. We love Nike because they give us our clothing and sports wear that is durable and comfortable. Other countries might not Nike so much, these are the places with the Nike workshops. Nike workshops are a big problem with poverty; they highly under pay their workers, they don't give them suitable conditions and working hours, and they threatened workers lives. The workers being only paid as low as two dollars a day had troubles affording water, food, medicine, and housing. The people who live there have to pick every month and plan out very well what they'll need for the next month, if they need food then they'll get food but that means there will be no money for medicine if they get sick. Those people live very harsh lives having to either not eat hardly anything for that month or having no medicine for when you get sick. These working conditions are very harmful and scary on so many levels that its unbelievable; it's unbelievable that globalization brought out these conditions to these people. Pop culture or "Popular Culture" is a meaning that refers to what is popular to us people as a collective. An example of pop culture in Canada would be Nike; you can't walk around anywhere in Canada without seeing a Nike product. In Japan a good pop culture example would be their Manga or Anime. Pop culture is usually spread around by the media to "show it off" and to see how "cool" it is. Many famous people partake in pop culture and trying to make things cool. Michael Jordan is a great example of this, he has a shoe named after him called the Jordans. This shoe was made by Nike and given to Jordan to show it off for them and make them look amazing and stylish and like a "super sports shoe". Pop culture is all about how you show it off to the people, how to make it look new and different and durable so people will buy it. Pop culture is also influenced by globalization to make it even more immense and popular. The Japanese did this with their Manga and Anime, they dispersed this all over North America and made it loved by many different people. Pop culture gives us something from every country and culture for us to love and accept and learn something new about the people around us. Globalization brings us closer together in ways, it gives us new customs and traditions, new ideas, new media and just new everything. Although globalization can give us these things globalization can also easily cause harm along the way to many different people. Globalization I believe is good but harmful, we need to know how to use globalization the right way so it benefits everyone and causes no harm, something like this will be hard but I hope it's achievable and that we will get to see that achievement.
